About this fish
A Lake Malawi mbuna, yellow through the body with dark bars across it. Also called the hornet cichlid, and the scientific name means wasp, which tells you most of what you need to know about the look. Mature males often darken right down to a deep brown or nearly black, so a tank of them does not stay the same colour year round.
They are active, bold and territorial, so they want length to move in and plenty of rock and caves to break up the sight lines. Sandy bottom. Keep them with other robust mbuna and run one male to several females, which spreads the aggression around instead of letting it land on one fish. They will take flakes, pellets, algae wafers and meaty food like brine shrimp or bloodworms.
Please do thorough research for tank compatible mates.

Keeping them well
Stable water matters more than perfect water. A well cycled tank and regular changes count for far more than chasing numbers on a test kit. Give them somewhere to get out of the light, feed a decent varied diet, and they will do the rest themselves.
If you are not sure whether something will suit your tank, email us before you order. We would far rather talk you out of a fish than sell you one that is going to struggle.
