The Jack Dempsey fish (Rocio octofasciata) is a popular, strikingly beautiful freshwater cichlid native to the warm, slow-moving waters of Central America. Named after the legendary 1920s heavyweight boxer due to its strong facial profiles and aggressive, territorial nature, this hardy fish is a staple in the aquarium hobby for fishkeepers with a bit of experience.
What is this fish, and what makes it worth having? How were they bred, and what should someone know before they order? Adults showcase a stunning base color ranging from dark gray to purplish-black, covered in brilliant iridescent blue, green, and gold flecks. Juveniles start out a muted tan or gray to camouflage themselves, slowly developing their vibrant spangles as they mature.

Keeping them well
Stable water matters more than perfect water. A well cycled tank and regular changes count for far more than chasing numbers on a test kit. Give them somewhere to get out of the light, feed a decent varied diet, and they will do the rest themselves.
